What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — a research-backed approach that helps the mind heal from trauma the way the body heals from a wound.
EMDR combines talk therapy with a simple physical movement. It is a type of mental health therapy that begins with a non-invasive, repetitive movement such as hand tapping or eye movement while interacting with the therapist. Sometimes the therapist will use a simple machine that uses light or pulses the patient holds in their hands.
The combination of physical stimulus or bilateral stimulation during a guided counseling session can rapidly focus the patient's mind on healing from past trauma, healing current emotional distress, relieving anxiety, and decreasing or eliminating depression.
For some people, EMDR therapy can replace months of alternative mental health counseling approaches. It is safe and comfortable for people of all ages.
